One of the common cries for help I hear around this time of year is, “OMG. I not only gained weight over the winter – I feel awful. What do I do?”

Honestly, most of us do a whole lotta nothing over the winter – we prefer cozy blankets + Netflix binges over braving the cold. As a result, we get stagnant + little (or big!) aches + pains develop. We also pack on the pounds because–hello!–we’re not moving our bodies. Add all that to the fact that we often eat a more acidic diet in the winter (like high-protein foods that mess with our intestines) and it’s a recipe for feeling like crap when spring – with all its hustle + bustle – rolls around.

So it’s no surprise that by the time spring shines its glorious (and much-missed!) sunlight down on us, ALL our bodies are basically SCREAMING for a break!

But honestly, I can’t take credit for the idea of the “spring cleanse.”

Today, we consider spring the unofficial season of lightening up + starting fresh–but the truth is, cultures have historically fasted or cleansed during the spring months in different fashions for hundreds + hundreds of years.

Back in the day, humans were much more in tune with nature and they listened to and flowed in harmony with the natural cycles of life.  

So, during spring, our ancestors (including some of our grandparents, even!) naturally gravitated toward cleansing foods in the springtime. Foods that just-so-happen to work in a beautifully orchestrated sequence to get us back to our natural warm-weather weight (or what we now call our “bikini bodies”.

I know you’ve got questions, so I’ve got answers.

Is this a juice cleanse, or will I be able to eat real food?

No–and yes absolutely! You’ll be sipping and savoring:

  • delicious smoothies (easy to prepare and will boost your energy)
  • herbal drinks (fabulous for digestion)
  • whole fresh foods – the real deal (these foods will combat inflammation and load you up with nutrients your body’s craving)

Will I starve?

No, no! Every food you’ll find in all the recipes is a belly-satisfying spring food that’s easy to digest.

Will there be special ingredients or supplements required for this Cleanse?

Nope. You can buy your food at the grocery store and at the farmer’s market. (And I’ll also give you five-star recommendations for certain herbs, supplements and superfoods to enhance the detoxification process. They aren’t necessary, but they ARE amazing. 🙂 )

Is it safe for everyone?

Yes, but I do recommend that you listen to your body. Your body knows what it needs! There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to a spring cleanse, but it is something everyone can benefit from. 🙂

Will I have to eat strange foods I’ve never heard before?

Many of the foods will be familiar to you, but I will also introduce you to some new ingredients and recipes that will become favorites of yours even after the detox. You will be able to pick and choose which foods and recipes you want to eat during the detox. You can stick with the foods you know, or you can choose to be a little adventurous and try something new. It’s totally up to you!

What foods will I be eating?

The Spring Cleanse is all about seasonal vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Some of these (delish) foods include: Kale, Spinach, Spring Mesclun Mix, Dandelion. Mushrooms, Onions, Scallions, Quinoa, Radishes, Chickpeas, and more.

And it DOES NOT include the following, which are known to cause inflammation and/or imbalances in many:

  • Dairy
  • Gluten
  • Eggs
  • Corn
  • Soy (minus some fermented miso)
  • Nightshades – potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplant
  • Peanuts
  • Caffeine
  • Refined Sugar
  • Alcohol
Can I do this cleanse while I work all week?

Absolutely! You might want to set aside a few hours on the weekend to prepare a few dishes – this will make it very easy to follow the protocol. Of course, if it is possible to slow life down a bit during this week – that would be ideal. Make less commitments, go to bed earlier, schedule some “me-time.” Most importantly, ask for support from your spouse, friends, neighbors and children.

One way to make it easier is to get a friend or neighbor to sign up with you. This way the two of you can trade off food preparation each day. This is also a great way to receive additional support.

How much preparation is required?

You can do most of the prepping on the weekend to prepare you for the week. You do not have to do a lot of cooking every day. (Of course, if you cook for your family there will be extra prepping and cooking. While many of the recipes can be enjoyed by everyone you may be making some extra meals just for yourself.)

Will I experience any side effects? How will I feel?

It depends largely on what you’re eating now. If you wolf down sugar, processed foods and caffeine on a daily basis, you might experience withdrawal, including headache, irritability, fatigue and cravings. This is a good sign– it means toxins are being released from your body! And don’t worry: It will pass generally in a few days. Most people feel great, have better sleep, and more energy than they’ve had in years after cleansing.

Will the Cleanse make me "run" to the bathroom?

Everyone has different bowel habits. Some people eliminate two to three times per day, while others eliminate less frequently. The cleanse is very gentle and not designed to make you run constantly to and from the restroom. You will be able to maintain a fairly normal schedule. Promise!

Do I need to have a special blender? I do not own a Vitamix or a juicer.

No, you don’t need a Vitamix. Any regular blender will do. You don’t need a juicer, either. 🙂

How will I know what to do?

You will get a step by step, day by day plan. There are many recipes to choose from so you can decide what you like. If you want an exact menu that is there for you too.

Will I get support from you?

I am available by email throughout the cleanse to personally answer any of your questions or concerns. I’m here for you!

Do we meet in person?

No, there’s no need. All materials will be sent to you via email. You will receive support via daily inspirational emails in the comfort of your home. Pull up a glass of vino and relax with a little love and tenderness each day.

Will I lose weight?

People often lose weight following a protocol like this–although everyone is different and nothing can be guaranteed. Sometimes there are more complex issues that may need some personalized attention. However, you will almost certainly look better, have more energy and have clearer skin as you go through the program. Isn’t that worth something, too? Remember, excess weight is waste. Once you get rid of some of the waste the weight will start to go with it.

I love coffee (or alcohol, chocolate, sweets, carbs ...etc.) I am afraid I will not be able to stick to the plan.

I will give you suggestions on what you can drink instead of coffee and how to gently reduce your coffee (sugar, alcohol) intake prior to the cleanse.

What about exercise? I am training for a marathon. Can I do this?

It depends on your training schedule and the date of your event. You can do the cleanse and you might be in better shape to perform. Most people honestly FEEL like doing something more restorative and gentle like yoga or tai chi while cleansing.

I am not sure if I can do this cleanse. I have never cleansed before.

Yes, you can. Almost everyone can do a gentle cleanse like this. I created this cleanse so it’s doable for anyone –and I’ll be there cheering you on every step of the way.

Can my spouse, partner, child join this cleanse?

Absolutely! That would be even better.

Are there additional costs?

No. You will receive the handbook and recipes as part of the cost for the program. Of course you will need to buy your food and any optional supplements.
