How to Escape Your Love / Hate relationship You Have With the Gym

Hello Luv, This is DD Devin of Deevine Intervention Lifestyle & Nutrition Health Coaching! Today, I want to share with you the one habit, you simply cannot afford to ignore, if you want to live a happier and healthier life! And you’ll be happy and surprised to learn, that it’s Not Working Out! It’s Movement!

I used to be a personal trainer for many years, and I’m here to tell you, I’ve heard (and have personally used) Eeeeeevery excuse in the book for not wanting to go to the gym…..from I’m too busy to workout, to I’m too tired to workout, it’s too hard, or I can’t afford a trainer, and, my allll time Favorite is, I don’t like to sweat😊

Well, the good news is, that working out is only responsible for10% of your body composition, you are also 10% genetics…and 80% What you eat….or more importantly What’s eating You!

Today, I really want to drive home even though I’d personally like to give working out a lot more credit, the truth is, that it’s More important to your heart, and lungs, and cardiovascular system, stress, sleep and hormones than weight loss.

Sure you burn calories, but, only until your next meal….and, if you’re anything like me, the harder I train, the hungrier I become….so I’m basically back to square zero!

But the biggest needle mover you can do to improve weight loss, is to Stress Less and to Sleep Better! And if you change your Motion, you will change your Emotion. So, when I workout or train, or MOVE my body I naturally release those feel good hormones which makes me happier, stronger not just physically but also emotionally, and makes it easier to handle challenges in my life without cleaning out the refrigerator!

Now, I have been a gym rat for most of my life and still find it challenging to wake up and work out…but what I’ve learned through health coaching and discovery, is, that you CAN NOT hate yourself into health. When I hear people say they need to lose weight before they go to the gym, or they constantly berate or negate themselves….Do you realize just How much Energy that takes up?

When I can show up fully in my mess, and love and accept myself in the place that I am at, Rather, than reject myself into change, it has an effervescent freeing up of energy. Versus how much energy we spend to constantly be bracing and the tension and time we spend in  resistance, which is the very thing that’s taking up our energy in the first place!!!

So, the resistance, is like an engine running and getting rid of the fuel of the engine….and so the more Love and acceptance for Everything about yourself and your circumstances, the more energy you will have.

How can you from this Absolute Total Surrender (because that’s the place where we Never get depleted) when you surrender to the Reality of the situation…maybe the situation hasn’t changed, but the experience isn’t as depleting.

So the FIRST step to getting your body moving is to NOT make it a Work out! UGH.  Now just the sound of that is exhausting! Make it Movement that’s right for your body for today!

My routine varies depending on how I feel every day.  I check in with her, and sometimes, she feels like going to the gym and lifting weights, other days it’s running, biking, swimming…….Pilates, yoga, paddle boarding…, or tennis…So first, I check in with what would make me feel Good….

And, if you stop for a second and ask Yourself….. how did You Feel, the last time you did some activity that you enjoyed……the answer would probably be ‘That you felt great!, That it was Fun’ And that’s the secret to exercise is that it Should be Fun!

If it’s a bore or a chore, then you’re doing the wrong movement for your body, mind and spirit.

I just completed a 2 week bike tour around Oregon and Vancouver and it was literally the Most fun that I can remember.  I felt like a kid again, the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, the bumps in the road such a joy ride!

And then ask yourself, What have you done recently that Zapped your energy? Could it have been eating fast food, staying up too late, drinking too much alcohol, working on the computer too much, being inside too long….

When you think of the things that zap your energy, remember that when you exercise or Move your body, you are actually gaining energy not depleting it!  So how about if you did more of what you loved and gave you energy instead of what zapped your energy?

So far, so good? Accept yourself where you are at! Choose an activity that’s fun. Start moving your body because you love yourself, not because you hate yourself!

And Finally, the secret sauce is that it doesn’t have to be Long or Hard,  it just has to be Consistent!


We only Think it’s going to be hard and take too much time, but ask yourself….when was the last time that you did something that wasn’t health promoting….could it have been watching TV sitting on your butt for 2 or maybe even 3 hours Last Night? When you realize that we have 168 hours in a week and movement should take about 5 or 6 of those. You don’t only deserve it, but you are More than worth it. And if you think you don’t have time to exercise, then you might as well make time to be sick.

And, when I hear ‘ I can’t afford it ‘ well here’s a newsflash for you….You’re gonna pay for well care or sick care…either way it’s gonna cost you. You’re gonna have to pay for either the trainer, gym, and organic food, Or, you’re gonna have to pay for the doctor, prescriptions or surgery! The choice is yours.

I personally consider my gym membership and health food my Health Insurance!

That was a horrible workout!….Said No One Ever!

So if you’ve been putting off getting your but in gear, I double dog DD Dare you to just move to the beat of your own drum and see if you aren’t smiling more and stressing less….and magically weight loss becomes a natural byproduct of that…..It’s not the focus or goal!

The point of this is, Even if you’re not getting to your rock star body or see immediate results…Remember, with the Consistency of the habit….Everything is coming together. You’re doing everything you need to be doing, and what you Really need to do is appreciate yourself for Showing up!    Eeeeeven when you didn’t want to…and you physically couldn’t do anything, and you Showed Up!

That’s the kind of commitment I’m talking about…To come from where Movement is a Commitment with a Capital C, and that there’s Never a week where’s something’s not happening, and it’s just going to be part of your life!

It’s the lifestyle change that comes from Love! And How do I Love Myself? By giving my body the movement it Craves everyday….And if you don’t really know what exercise to do especially if you’ve really had an angst ridden history with exercise, where like you used to exercise and punish yourself and it triggers all those old patterns…Don’t do XYZ…

Try to incorporate more of what you did as a kid. That maybe you loved to dance, roller-skate, hula hoop or play basketball…then, do that! Choose a movement that feels fun to you and do it consistently.

This is where a trainer or friend comes in handy if you can’t show up for yourself.

The best way to set up accountability is to ask yourself this question….What would make it Inevitable, that I would do the form of movement that I Like 3 times or 5 times or even 2 times a week that will keep my body moving?

Yes! It’s important to eat well and there’s Not enough exercise to make up for a bad diet, that’s true, but it’s movement, that will take your body and your mind to the next level.
